2022/23 SEASON PREVIEW

Posted: Friday, 7 October 2022

Cricket season is upon us and it is shaping up to be a cracker!

We kick the season off with some T20 action, supported by a new sponsor for the bay, Venture Developments.

Defending champions, Cadets once again have a very young squad this season with the average age well under 20. They will be looking to captain Andrew Mascall, Fergus Lellman, Marcel Collett and Spencer Wills to continue to step into leadership roles.

They will be facing off against the experienced Bayleys Central Indians team who will be without player/coach Anish Desai after making the move to Greerton. They welcome Jake Rowe (UK) and Cormac McLoughin-Gavin (Ireland) into the fold and will also be looking to bring through some of their younger academy players throughout the season after several had a taste of premier cricket last season.

Tauranga Boys College 1st XI have experienced a significant change with the retirement of Charles ‘Potsy' Williams from his Player/Coach role. After representing the school in over 300 premier games over the last 20 years or so as a student and a teacher, Charles has called time on his impressive school career. TBC wishes him all the best and thanks him for his countless hours of volunteer work with the school's cricket pathway.

After not winning a trophy for the first time in five years last season, Greerton are determined not to make it a habit - acquiring Hamilton Representative Anish Desai as player/coach from the Central Indians as well as adding the vastly experienced Charles Wiliams to the squad. Greerton also boasts 6 players with 100+ prem games for the side under their belt so will be leaning on their experience this season.

Playing Greerton in the first round, Lake Taupo Cricket will be looking to improve on their 2021/22 season. They welcome two UK recruits, Ollie Sherwood and Tom Foster (who will also be head coach) and will be leaning on captain Habib Malik, Michael Mitchell and AJ How to step up again this season.

The Flying Mullet Te Puke side have one notable player loss this summer with Tai Bridgman-Raison pushing pause on his 23 year innings for the Te Puke Premiers. Captain Blair McKenzie knows that Tai will leave a big gap in the squad this season. "Tai has been an integral part of Te Puke Cricket for many years and the commitment he has shown to the club is unmatched. He has always been a key player for us and his departure will leave a significant hole to fill.”

They have gained some exciting young talent with Harsh Patel and Jack Jones joining the squad after the Tauranga Boys College Gillette Cup Campaign as well as Sam Lund from the Central Indians and Ben Bodha from the UK.

They are facing the strong Mount Maunganui side who have acquired ND Representative Matt Fisher. The Marlins have however lost some big names with Brett Randell, Oli White, Dave Hancock and Niven Dovey all playing outside of the bay region. The experience of the likes of Captain Matt Golding (who is closing in on his 200th game for the club) and Pete Drysdale will be invaluable this season.

Geyser City are bringing in the big guns this summer with Tyler McGladdery from the UK joining the squad. Tyler is coming off some hot form having scored over 1800 runs in his home season and will make himself at home in the Geyser top order.

Former Nepal U19 Captain Rit Gautam will be joining the team in the near future and Mark Chapman will be back to captain the side.

Papamoa Cricket are ringing in the changes with last season's top run scorer Nik Vishwanath leading the young team. Focusing on the future, Papamoa welcome 16 year old Keagan Bromilow to the squad as well as Conor Wells, Ed Sclater and Rohit Sardarjoshi from outside of the club. They have also brought on Simon Herbst as club coach.
