TEAM NAMING HAWKE CUP CHALLENGE

Posted: Thursday, 10 February 2022

The Craigs Investment Partners Bay of Plenty Men's team will be looking to repeat history this weekend as they challenge Hawkes Bay for the Hawke Cup.

The team head down to Napier to play for the most prized silverware in minor association cricket, something that is not missed on coach Daniel Flynn.

"We are excited about the opportunity to challenge for the Hawke Cup. It’s an extremely sought after trophy at District Association level and one we would love to get our hands on again."

Bay of Plenty have an impressive record in Hawke Cup matches against Hawkes Bay, winning 4 out of 5 and have left with the Hawke Cup in hand every time they have challenged Hawkes Bay. This record dates back to 1986 when Bay of Plenty won the Hawke Cup for the first time ever at Nelson Park. The most recent being in 2016 when they won by 6 wickets - they then went on to defend the cup for the entire 2016/17 season.

Despite some favourable statistics, Flynn's focus is firmly on the job at hand this weekend and knows the young bay side will have to play well to compete in the three day match.

"We know we are going to have to play some really good cricket to beat a very strong Hawkes Bay side."

Six players named will be making their Hawke Cup debuts, including NDCA development player Fergus Lellman who joins his father, Fraser Lellman, in playing Hawke Cup cricket for Bay of Plenty.
