BAYWIDE CUP T20 SEMI FINALS

4 teams woke up on Saturday morning all with the same dream that they would be standing on Blake Park at the end of the day, victorious with the Baywide Cup in hand.

The day began with the winner of each pool playing the quarter final winners (2nd vs 3rd in each pool). This saw top of the table Bond & Co Mount Maunganui play The Flying Mullet Te Puke.

Te Puke won the toss and decided to put defending champs, Mount Maunganui into bat. They may have been regretting that decision as they conceded 18 runs off the first over, including 2 sixes and a four from opening batsman, Oli White.

Lacking support, the Marlins innings turned into the Oli White show as he sent the ball flying in all directions and contributed close to 55% of the team's runs with 77 off 56 before he was finally dismissed in the 19th over. Contributions from Ben Musgrave (17) and Ben Pomare (15) helped their side get to a competitive total of 142.

Te Puke's innings got off to a cracking start with Devon Serrurier smashing a 6 off the 2nd ball, helping them to 10/0 after the first over. The next 3 overs however were not pleasant viewing as they went from 10/0 to 11/1 to 11/2 to 13/3.

A 4th wicket partnership of 69 runs between Iman Nahal and Denym Clarke helped calm things down and despite Dominic Crombies efforts with the ball (4/23) Nahal, Clarke and Bridgeman-Raison led their team to victory in the 19th over. Nahal top scoring with a standout 83 off 56 balls.

Over on Blake Park 1, it was the Element IMF Otumoetai Cadets who had an unbeaten record in this seasons Baywide Cup who faced, quarter final winners, Eves Realty Premier Greerton.

Deciding to have a bat first up, Marcel Collett and Chris Mascall put on a solid 25 run opening stand for the Cadets before Collett was bowled by Israel Turner. This brought in Tim Pringle who scored a superb 65 off 48 balls, including 3 fours and 5 sixes. Contributions from the middle order helped set Greerton a total of 150 to chase down.

Despite an entertaining 41 off 28 balls from Brett Hamilton, the Greerton innings never got going (with 54% of the balls bowled being dots) and fell 36 runs short of the winning total and setting up a Cadets vs Te Puke final.

BAYWIDE CUP T20 FINAL

As the clock struck 3, it was time for the final and the Cadets had no hesitation in batting first after winning the toss.

The Cadets got off to a less than ideal start, finishing the 1st over on 1/1 after Bibin Babu bowled opener Chris Mascall for a golden duck.

The in form Tim Pringle was next in and didn't waste any time with a quick 34 off 23 balls including 3 sixes in his 30 minute stint at the crease but with only the captain, Andew Mascall and all rounder Mayura Galappaththi also reaching double digits, the Cadets were looking light on runs when they were bowled out in the 19th over for 115. Iman Nahal the stand out bowler for Te Puke with 3 wickets in his 3 overs.

Feeling the victory was within reach, the Te Puke openers started strong with 2 boundaries coming off the first over. As the innings went on, runs were harder to come by and by the 14th over Te Puke found themselves 4 down with 63 on the board. Enter Tai Bridgman-Raison who, prior to the final, had raked up 363 runs so far in 2022....and he came to the party, smashing 23 off 14 balls (20 coming off one over) which helped his team get within reach, needing 22 off the last 2 overs to claim victory.

Disciplined bowling from the Cadets and wickets falling consistently make the task too difficult for Te Puke, falling short by 4 runs
