Element IMF Cadets Defeat Carrus Mount Maunganui To Win Williams Cup Thriller

Element IMF Cadets won their tenth Williams Cup since the mid 1990’s and their first since 2010 - when they defeated Carrus Mount Maunganui in a thriller, in the 2017 Baywide Championship Final at the Bay Oval on Saturday (25 March 2017).

Cadets batted first at Bay of Plenty Cricket headquarters, with the Mount spin bowlers restricting Cadets attempts to hit out, on a wicket block that had hosted a Plunket Shield game during the week. When skipper Scott Steward was given out LBW, Cadets were 114/4 in the 36th over.

Club veteran Jono Boult and Donovan Deeble, started an assault on the Mount bowlers which took their side through to 210/4, in their allotted fifty overs. Boult was there at the end of the Cadets turn at bat with an unbeaten 53 with Deeble posting 47 not out.

The Mount Maunganui openers of Brenton Thompson and Nick Smith made a cracking start to their teams run chase, before Smith was removed for 22. Thompson continued the momentum and when he was caught by Jono Boult for 77, Mount Maunganui appeared in charge at 142 for the loss of three wickets.

The Cadets bowled then tightened the screws and strangled the Mount Maunganui batsmen’s attempts to hit out, to restrict the Mount to 198/9, claiming a hard fought 12 run victory. Sean Davey was the best of the Cadets bowling attack returning 3/43, with Jono Boult and skipper Scott Steward taking two wickets apiece.

Car parking was at a premium at Blake Park, with a club rugby encounter and two Western Bay of Plenty Championships fought out on wickets adjacent to the Bay Oval. Lake Taupo CC and Whakatane United, who both play in the Western Bay competition by invitation, fought out the Reserve Grade title with the Taupo side cruising to a six wicket win.

Tauranga Boys College third eleven, who consist of Year ten and eleven players, annexed the Western Bay B Grade crown after they bowled defending titleholders in the Singh XI out for 84 and then got home for the loss of five wickets.
