Wet Weather Ruins Aquinas and Tauranga Boys First XI Showdown at ND Gillette Cup Finals

Hamilton Boys High School and St. Paul's Collegiate to play Final Match at a Later Date

Tauranga Boys and Aquinas Colleges First XI’s, can be well pleased with their performances at the ND Gillette Cup Finals, in spite of their much anticipated showdown for third place on day four, being ruined by wet weather without a ball being bowled.

The NZ Cricket Schools Tournament played in Rotorua 25/28 March 2018, matched the top eight Northern Districts first elevens in combat, to find the ND representative at the Gillette Cup National Finals in term four.

Hamilton Boys High School and St Paul’s Collegiate (Hamilton) who topped their respective pools, will now square off in a one off encounter, to find the ND side to play in the NZ Cricket Gillette Cup title deciders after day four was abandoned.

Both Western Bay of Plenty representatives finished the tournament with a two win – one loss record. There good form in Rotorua, was franked by Tauranga Boys and Aquinas soles losses coming against Hamilton Boys and St Paul’s respectively.

Two Bay of Plenty players led the way for their teams, with outstanding individual batting performances, which topped the tournament batting list. A courageous captain’s knock, didn’t quite get Tauranga Boys College home against archrivals Hamilton Boys High School. Tauranga Boys College captain Taylor Bettelheim opened his teams batting attack and smacked 109 runs, which included a dozen 4’s and a big blow over the boundary rope.

Aquinas vice-captain Fergus Lellman carried his bat to post a neat one hundred runs off 88 balls, against Kamo High School on day one. Fresh from his batting heroics, Fergus showcased his bowling talents against St Paul’s Collegiate, taking five wickets for 21 runs, as the Hamilton School were bowled out for 193.

Both Western Bay teams opened their Gillette Cup campaigns with a victory apiece. Aquinas College chased down a rain adjusted target against Kamo High School, with Tauranga Boys cruising to an eight wicket win over St John’s College.

Day Two, saw Tauranga Boys College bowl Whangarei Boys High School out for just 104, then knuckle down, to take out a four wicket victory. Aquinas College were in contention for much of the match with St Paul’s, before the Hamilton Schools bowlers struck back with a vengeance, removing their opponents last six batters for just 14 runs.

Aquinas College posted a hard fought 27 run win over St Peters College on day three. Tauranga Boys tasted defeat against three-time Gillette Cup National Champions Hamilton Boys High School, after the Western Bay team made a valiant attempt for victory.
