Posted: Wednesday, 29 November 2017

Tauranga Boys College First XI are headed for Palmerston North next week (4-8 December 2017), to play in the NZ Cricket First XI Cup Nationals Finals.

The Secondary School Boys’ First XI Cup is a secondary school competition for year nine to thirteen boys. The First XI Cup began in 1990 (Under the banner of the Gillette Cup) and is among the longest-running competitions in secondary school sport.

Earlier this year, Tauranga Boys booked a berth against the best secondary school cricket teams from the other five major cricket associations in the country, after winning the ND Secondary School title.
After despatching Whangarei Boys High School, Hillcrest High School and St Pauls Collegiate in preliminary action, they squared of with arch-rivals Hamilton Boys High School, in the ND title decider.
The Waikato City team won the toss and invited Tauranga Boys to bat first. Finn Sears scored a hard hit 51 and posted a 72 run opening stand with Marcel Collett. Dominic Crombie backed up the opening partnership with 47 runs and featured in a fifth wicket stand of 58, with Iman Singh (25). Tauranga Boys College set their opponents a solid target after being removed for 189, at the end of the regulation fifty overs.
Rhys Mischewski and Finn Sears opened their sides bowling attack and bowled well, to have Hamilton Boys under early pressure. A direct hit at the stumps from Marcel Collett, turned the momentum in the game, triggering an opposition collapse which saw Hamilton Boys six down with just 68 runs on the board. The Bay of Plenty side then went on to take out the ND First XI Cup title, with Iman Singh and Brad Howard finishing off the Hamilton Boys turn at bat.

Tauranga Boys College will be playing in the First XI Cup for the sixth time since the dawn of the new Millennium. The Western Bay Secondary School  have established an impressive record in the First XI Cup in the last decade. First equal in 2005, was followed by three successive third place finishes, in the symbol of Secondary School cricket superiority in the country.
Current Black Cap captain Kane Williamson wrote his name into the First XI Cup record books, representing Tauranga Boys College, with three centuries. In 2006, Williamson posted his highest First XI Cup score of 120 not out, followed by 112 and a neat one hundred the following year.
