PRESSURE ON VERSATILE TAURANGA WILLIAMS CUP CONTENDERS

PRESSURE ON VERSATILE TAURANGA WILLIAMS CUP CONTENDERS

Posted: Friday, 26 February 2021

The pressure is on the  2021 Versatile Tauranga Williams Cup championship contenders, with just three qualifying rounds remaining, before the semi-finals on the 20/21 March 2021.

“Finishing in the top two at the conclusion of the round robin competition, is well rewarded with a spot in the Preliminary Final, which offers the victor a direct spot to the Williams Cup Grand Final on March 27th”. “With the loser of the match, getting a second bite at the final cherry the very next day, when they will have the opportunity to play the winner of the Qualifying Final between the third and fourth place sides, for the second place in the title decider” said Bay of Plenty Cricket Development Manager Scott Steward.

Eves Realty Greerton and Bayleys Central Indians share the current lead, with Bond & Co Mount Maunganui, lurking seven points away in third place. Element IMF Cadets round out the top four, with Generation Homes Lake Taupo, Flying Mullet Te Puke and Holland Beckett Law Tauranga Boys College, in a mid-table logjam.

The key match-up this Saturday (27 February 2021), will take place between Cadets and Tauranga Boys College, at Tauranga Boys headquarters at Nicholson Field. Victory for Cadets will be a big step in securing a playoff spot while a Tauranga Boys College win would put them in the hunt for a top four finish.

Another big encounter will be fought out at Blake Park, where hosts Mount Maunganui will square off with Central Indians, who will bring an unbeaten 2021 Williams Cup record to the encounter. A classic battle between the sides from the two Bay of Plenty cities, will not only have valuable Williams Cup points on offer, but also regional bragging rights up for grabs.

Greerton, will be favored to defeat Papamoa, on their first visit to the Alice Johnson Oval this season. However the Greerton flagship team, has had to withstand solid challenges in their last couple of games and won't be taking anything for granted. Papamoa have showed some good form in their Baywide debut season and have the potential to cause an upset.

Te Puke who are another side in the mid-table logjam, can keep their mathematical chance of making the playoffs alive, if they defeat Craig Investment Partners Geyser. Te Puke only have to look back at their previous sixteen Williams Cup titles to provide motivation for success at Smallbone Park.
