Peter Drysdale was presented with the Bay of Plenty Cricket 2018/19 Player of the Year Award, at the annual Bay of Plenty Cricket Prizegiving, held on Thursday (4 April 2019) evening.
Peter returned to the high representative standards he has set himself after an injury plagued six months in the previous season. The change of captaincy resulted in Pete coming back with fresh determination, to hit the most senior men’s team runs of 330, with the icing on the cake being five bowling scalps.
During the representative season Pete, advanced his Bay of Plenty appearances to 96 caps, closing in on Derek Beard (105) and Mike Wright (102). He also became just the third Bay player to eclipse the 3000 run mark, behind Mike Wright (3950) and Bharat Popli (3353).
Kane Williamson was awarded the Bay of Plenty First Class Player of the Year. The accolades continue to flow for the Black Cap Captain, with a record 20th New Zealand test century and leading the Black Caps to test series wins over Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
A trio of players received trophies that recognized the achievements of three former high profile Bay of Plenty players. The Mike Wright batting prize was won by Peter Drysdale, with Chris Atkinson winning the Derek Beard bowling trophy, during the Bay of Plenty Senior Men’s team season. Fergus Lellman was presented with the Brendan Bracewell most promising player award.
The Bay of Plenty Development honours went to two young players who both posted significant milestones during the BOPCA Development campaign. Fergus Lellman posted 270 runs, which included a century, with Tim Pringle taking nine wickets in just two games including a seven wicket bag.
For the first time the Baywide Premier Hart Family Trophy (Baywide Champion of Champions) was shared by two sides, when Otumoetai Cadets and Greerton couldn’t be separated over the three Baywide competitions.
The David Johnston Cup for Service to Coaching was presented to Bay of Plenty Representative Coach Charles Williams. During the ND representative season, the Bay First XI won the Twenty 20 Championship and lost just a solitary Fergus Hickey Rosebowl match.
Stu Martin was awarded the Peter Wright Cup for Services to Umpiring. Stu never turns down an umpiring appointment, which requires considerable travel from his Taupo home base and he has impressed players and fellow umpires alike in his time standing in the game.
