ND Senior Secondary Tournament Day 2

Defending ND Senior Secondary champions Bay of Plenty Coastland laid down the gauntlet, to the other 2017 championship contenders, when they blasted Hamilton away in the their day (12 December 2017) two fifty-over match. 

The Bay of Plenty representatives won the toss and backed themselves to post a big target against their arch rivals. Two years ago the Waikato City team annexed the ND title with Coastland prevailing in last year’s title decider. 

Opener Marcel Collett again go his team away to a good start, at a run a ball, before being caught behind for 27. The arrival of Ben Pomare accelerated the action, with the Coastland keeper in grand touch reaching 55 before being dismissed. Coming in at six, skipper Mikaere Leef led from the front as he hit his way to his sides top score of 65, in a innings that contained nine 4’s. 

The Coastland tail wagged, with Te Puke premier players in Daniel Price and Cameron Riley both reaching 25, before being removed. Coastland set their long-time rivals a very big challenge reaching 252 for the loss of nine wickets. 

Cameron Riley opened the bowling at one end and was quickly rewarded with the first wicket falling, with just 11 runs on the board. At 72/5, the Bay side were well in control, going on to bowl Hamilton out for just 117 and claim a big 135 run win.

The Bay of Plenty wickets spoils were shared around five bowlers, with Fergus Lellman having the best economy rate, taking two wickets for just 9 runs. Cam Riley, Craig Baldry and Iman Singh all bowled good line and length to be rewarded with two wickets apiece.

Bay of Plenty Lakeland had a good tussle with Pool Two winners Counties Manukau before tasting defeat. Counties took first use of the batting strip and posted a big target when they were bowled out for 257. Bradley Wiggins, Connor Scott-Dickson and Juan Nieuwoudt, all bowled with plenty of enthusiasm to grab two wickets apiece.

The Lakeland side weren’t fazed by the big challenge and were in contention for much of the encounter, before being removed for 206 at the end of the 48th over. Ryan Neves was again in good touch with the bat to top score with 61 runs. After two days of competition the Lakeland player leads the tournament batting stakes with 125 runs. Chris Tupea also made a another statement with the bat to reach 33 before being dismissed.

Day three at the Poverty Bay tournament brings semi-final action, with Coastland meeting Northland in the championship playoffs and Lakeland squaring off with the ND Inviataion XI in the plate rounds.
