Age Group

Victory and defeat, were experienced by the two Bay of Plenty teams who contested the ND Senior Secondary cricket tournament semi-finals, on day three (13 December 2017) of the annual age-group tournament being played in Gisborne.

Bay of Plenty Lakeland batted first against the ND Invitation XI in the Plate playoffs and set their opponents a solid target, after being removed for 226. The Bay side drawn from the Eastern Bay, Rotorua and Taupo regions, was in desperate trouble at four down with just 11 runs on the board, when Chris Tupea came to the crease. The Eastern Bay of Plenty all-rounder, first steadied the ship, then took control of his teams innings as he belted 74 runs.

Tupea put on a 65 run partnership with Ryan Neves who reached 44 before being dismissed. The Lakeland anchor was then joined by Jarrod Mealing, with the pair posting a 119 run alliance before Mealing was caught in the field for 62.

The ND Invitation side got away to a flyer getting to the 51 run mark before losing their first wicket. Then the Lakeland bowlers started to take control and with their opponents at 115/5, were right back in the encounter. Led by Bradley Wiggins, who took four wickets for 23 runs, the ND Invitation side were bowled out for 174, to give the Bay side a solid 52 run win.

A bad afternoon at the office cost Bay of Plenty Coastland a place in the championship title decider. Squaring off with Northland, the team from the far north won the coin toss and elected to bat. While they got away to a flyer, the Coastland bowlers pegged Northland back, to have them five down with one hundred runs on the board.

When the Coastland bowlers remove their opponents for 169 - the Bay side would have fancied their chances of victory.

Opening the batting, Marcel Collett again defied a determined opening bowling attack to post 27 runs before being dismissed. Batting at six, Daniel Price gave his team plenty of hope reaching his team’s top score of 35 – however the last five Coastland wickets fell for just 25 runs with the defending titleholders bowled out for 123.

Two-Day playoffs will end the 2017 ND tournament in Poverty Bay, with Coastland playing Hamilton for third place and Lakeland meeting Waikato Valley in the fifth place playoffs.
