T20 First Round

Eves Realty Greerton ended the first two rounds of the Baywide T20 competition, on top of the point’s ladder, after defeating Baywide new recruits GM Painters Lake Taupo CC and Element IMF Cadets. The hard fought win over archrivals Cadets in the late afternoon game on Saturday (7 October 2017), was the Pemberton Park based side first win against Cadets since November 2015.

Cadets batted first and reached 136/7, with new season skipper Jono Boult top scoring with 45, while Scott Steward got amongst the runs with 39 runs. Brett Hampton and James Boyd both grabbed two wickets apiece for Greerton.

The Greerton charge for victory faltered early, when Cadets took a wicket with their first ball of the Greerton innings. Greerton captain Shane Wineti, who has just returned home from a winter sojurn in England, picked up the challenge and led his side to victory with a half century. Brett Hampton smacked a quickfire 28 not out with Lee Watkins and Josh Ormrod also getting amongst the runs.

New World Te Puke skipper Stephen Crossan, got his team away to a flyer in the opening round against Bayleys Central Indians, hammering 83 off thirty odd balls as his charges posted 170/2. While the Rotorua side made a determined charge for victory they came up short when restricted to 145/5.

Lake Taupo CC who have earned promotion to the Baywide premier ranks for the first time this season, took Te Puke down to the wire in round two. The new recruit’s bowlers removed seven Te Puke batsmen who finished with 123 runs in the scorebook. With Lake Taupo needing six to win in the last over, Te Puke bowler Cam Riley restricted his opponents to just three runs to give Te Puke a narrow victory.

Carrus Mount Maunganui who sat out the early bye also remained unbeaten after despatching Central Indians. Two new season Mount bowlers in Daniel Smith and Donavan Marshall, made their new teammates sit up and take notice, when they greatly assisted their side in removing Central Indians for 108. Smith who has moved north from Southland took three wickets at a cost of 10 runs with Marshall returning 2/9.

Bay representative batsman Ben Musgrave anchored the Mount Maunganui victory with an unbeaten 38 runs, while youngster Logan Carr posted a handy 29, as the victors cantered to victory with seven wickets to spare.

Another Bay of Plenty representative to impress on the opening day of the season, was Greerton batsman Tom MacRury. The Bay opener blasted 91 off 37 balls, as Greerton reached 229/4 against Lake Taupo in round one action. Lee Watkins posted a half century with the Lake Taupo captain Roger Urbahn taking two wickets for 37 runs. MacRury backed up his batting performance grabbing four wickets for just 6 runs, as the Taupo side were bundled out for 112, to give Greerton a 117 run win.
