Fergus Hickey Rosebowl 23-24 November

Picture this - Northland need one run to tie and two runs to win, to defeat Craigs Investment Partners Bay of Plenty, with the batsman facing sitting on 129 not out.

Bay of Plenty spin-bowler Peter Drysdale then weaved some of his magic with the ball to grab the wicket of the Northland centurion, who finished a defiant innings stranded on 129 runs, with Bay of Plenty posting a dramatic victory to earn the ND 2020 Hawke Cup Direct Challenge spot.

The occasion was the ND Fergus Hickey Rosebowl game between Bay of Plenty and Northland, played at the Cobham Oval in Whangarei, 23th and 24th November 2019.

The visitors to the far north took first use of the batting strip and were quickly under the pump, losing their first three wickets with just 62 runs on the board. “Taylor Bettleheim took his opportunity in just his second game for the Bay senior men’s side and grafted a very selfless 66 runs”, “The dismissal of Taylor, saw Fergus Lellman taking the responsibility for getting the team out of danger, looking untroubled, as he posted our sides top score of 82”, said Bay of Plenty Coach Charles Williams.

“Throughout our entire turn at bat, our young guns stood up with Tim Pringle playing a very confident innings and backing it up the next day bowling twenty plus overs on the trot”. “Dominic Crombie scored some valuable runs down the order on day two, with the most pleasing thing for me being the way our younger batsmen stood up when we needed them”.

Bay of Plenty started well in their defence of, 282, before Northland dug in to go on attack. By late afternoon the Bay seamers had bowled tirelessly in very hot conditions “Not once did the seamers ask for a rest and they kept charging in from the opening ball to the last wicket”. “They were complemented by the relentless line and length from Tim Pringle and Peter Drysdale. Both spinners built pressure and both of them bowled superbly”.

When the dramatic end came - Bay of Plenty had not only completed the rare feat of beating Northland in the far north, but had secured a Hawke Cup Direct Challenge against Hamilton in early 2020.

“The victory shows the outstanding attitude of the current squad and that no game is ever beyond us. We have an exciting group of players in our squad and we cannot wait to try to win back-to-back ND Twenty 20 title in Taupo in a few weeks time”, said the Bay of Plenty Coach.
