Tauranga Boys College Batsman Blasts Century

A well-crafted century from Cooney Lees Morgan Tauranga Boys College Marcel Collett, against Bayleys Central Indians, grabbed the headlines in the Baywide Cup played on Saturday (4 November 2017) afternoon.

The players braved wet weather in the Western Bay of Plenty during the day, in order to achieve a result in the encounter, which was transferred from the original venue of Smallbone Park in Rotorua to Nicholson Field.

Central Indians batted first and set the Tauranga students a substantial target, when they were dismissed for 213 in the 45th over. Jake Rowe top scored for the Rotorua side with 70 runs and combined with skipper Andrew Gibbs (36) to put together a solid middle-order partnership.

However the game belonged to Marcel Collett, who took control of his team’s reply, to blast 132 at a little better than a run a ball. The Tauranga Boys opening batsman belted eighteen 4's and one six in his match winning innings, with his side posting a seven wicket win in the 35th over.

Element IMF Cadets also battled the inclement weather conditions, with a two hour break in play, before overcoming New World Te Puke at the Tauranga Domain. The hosts were 108/1, when rain forced the players from the field. They went on to reach 232/6, in a match reduced to 37 over per side. Sean Davey top scored with 72 runs, with two of the teams young guns in Fergus Lellman (58) and Rubén Clinton (41) also getting plenty of runs.

The home side cruised to a big win when they removed the visitors for 108. One of Cadets other youngsters in Tim Pringle, did plenty of damage with the ball taking four wickets at a cost of 15 runs. Cam Riley was the best of the Te Puke batsmen top scoring with a gritty 35 runs.

While the Eves Realty Greerton match-up with Carrus Mount Maunganui saw the Mount turn at bat completed, further persistent rain at Pemberton Park, resulted in the game not being finished with the points shared.
