Tauranga Boys College Warm-Up For National Finals With A Win Against Mount Maunganui

Cooney Lees Morgan Tauranga Boys College victory over Carrus Mount Maunganui in the Baywide Cup on Saturday (2 December 2017), has provided the Tauranga secondary school first eleven with the ideal warm-up, for their appearance in the NZ Cricket First XI Cup National Finals in Palmerston North in the coming week.

The Tauranga students batted first and were dismissed for 168. Ben Pomare top-scored falling one short of a half century, with Mount skipper Dale Swan and Tony Goodin doing the damage with the ball taking three wickets apiece.

Mount Maunganui appeared to be cruising when they reached the 70 run mark without loss. The dismissal of the two openers saw the visitors to Nicholson Field, still in good shape at 84 for the loss of two wickets. However three successive Mount ducks, orchestrated by Tauranga Boys captain Mikaere Leef, turned the game on its head. At 86/5, Mount Maunganui were on the back foot, with the Tauranga Boys bowlers going on to remove their opponents 15 runs short of their target.

New World Te Puke leapfrogged Eves Realty Greerton, who sat out the bye, to move into second spot on the standings, after defeating Bayleys Central Indians by nine wickets. The Rotorua visitors to the Te Puke Domain were bowled out for 173, with Stephen Nicholls 66 shining out like a beacon. Justin Scott did plenty of damage taking four wickets for just 15 runs.

Te Puke captain Stephen Crossan staged a batting blitzkrieg, to hammer an unbeaten 101 off 91 balls. His batting partner for most of the innings, in Brody Gilroy, was patience personified as he worked his way to 32 not out, with the Te Puke nine wicket win coming in the 42nd over.

Element IMF Cadets Cadets booked a Baywide Cup Final berth in two weeks time, after their trip down the state highway, to beat GM Painters Lake Taupo CC. The visitors batted first and finished with 283/8. Sean Davey blasting the Baywide Cup second three figure score, with a neat century. Led by four wickets from skipper Jono Boult, the Western Bay of Plenty side bowled the home side out for 93, to claim a 190 run win.

Next weekend’s last round of qualifying play, will see a shoot-out between Te Puke and Greerton, for the right to meet Cadets in the Baywide Cup Final.
