Carrus Mount Maunganui And Element IMF Cadets Meet In Baywide Cup First Round

The two heavyweights from last seasons Baywide premier cricket competitions, will headline the opening round of the Baywide Cup, which kicks off on Saturday (28 October 2017) afternoon.

Carrus Mount Maunganui and Element IMF Cadets fought out the 2016/17 Baywide and Williams Cups championships, with the score ending in one victory apiece. This weekend, the two Western Bay of title contenders will square off at Blake Park two in round one of the Baywide Cup.

The Baywide early season competition, has an added prize attached with the winner grabbing the Bay of Plenty berth in the ND Club Championships.

Just three clubs have had their name engraved on the Baywide prize since the competition was introduced a decade ago. Mount Maunganui has annexed the limited over trophy on six occasions with Cadets and Eves Realty Greerton posting two victories apiece.

Mount Maunganui won a battle of attrition in last seasons Baywide Cup title decider, with the Mount side, bowling Cadets out for 94 and then having to work hard to take out a five wicket win. Mount skipper Dale Swan was the individual star of the final taking five wickets at a cost of 28 runs.

The best individual performances of last season’s two round competition, were Cadets batsman Donavan Deeble with an unbeaten 151 against Central Indians and Mount Maunganui bowler Daniel Hill, returning the remarkable figures of six wickets for just 14 runs in a match-up with the Rotorua team.

The Cadets verses Mount Maunganui contest at Blake Park will have an additional edge, with the Western Bay of Plenty Cricket challenge trophy of the Baker Cup on the line. Dating back to the 1930's, the former Tauranga Cricket Association championship silverware engraving tells the tale of local cricket superiority over the decades.

Greerton will meet premier newcomers GM Painters Lake Taupo CC at Fergusson Park. The side from the Great Lake region is finding out about life in the fast lane of Bay of Plenty cricket. While they have played just three matches in the top echelon without success, they took New World Te Puke to the wire in their T20 clash on the opening day of the season.

The recent inclement weather has seen the Te Puke encounter with Cooney Lees Morgan Tauranga Boys College transferred to Fergusson Park. Tauranga Boys First eleven have recently returned home from a tour of South Africa, which has given the young players another perspective on the game.

Bayleys Central Indians will remain on the sideline in the opening round of the Baywide Cup after drawing the bye.
