The Skippers Diary

The Bay of Plenty leg, of Sir Richard Hadlee’s launch of “The Skipper’s Diary”, which chronicles his father’s diary of the 1949 New Zealand Cricket Team tour of England, will also launch the Bay of Plenty Cricket Supporters Club.

Walter Hadlee, captained the New Zealand Cricket tour which was played out in war-torn Britain, at a time where rationing was still in effect and buildings still lay in ruins. During the eight-month tour, Walter Hadlee kept a comprehensive journal which Sir Richard has developed into a book, detailing a journey that included a match in occupied Germany.

Bay of Plenty Cricket was delighted to be asked by Sir Richard Hadlee to host a leg of the book launch of “The Skipper’s Diary” which Richard has put together from his father’s diary from the 1949 tour by a New Zealand side to England.

“From the beginning, we advised Richard that we wanted to do something alongside his book launch, which would also benefit Bay of Plenty Cricket in the long term. That intention has led us to dovetailing the Sir Richard Hadlee evening, with the launch of the Bay of Plenty Cricket Supporters Club” said Bay of Plenty Cricket CEO Chris Rapson.

“The objectives of the Bay of Plenty Cricket Supporters club are to support cricket (players, teams & the code) in our region and to provide an opportunity for those fans of the game, who no longer play “serious” cricket, to fraternise together and support the code”. “There will be early bird purchase opportunities for ticketing to events, regular events such as golf days, dinners, festival games, meet the players and old-timers matches”.

“We believe that there are well over five thousand serious cricket supporters in the Bay of Plenty. If we can encourage a good number of those supporters to join our supporters group, then the future of the Bay of Plenty Cricket Supporters Club is assured and should provide great fun and enjoyment in the years ahead”.

An added attraction on the night will be guest speaker Peter Williams. While well known as a regular 1 News news-caster, Peter has an earlier extensive sports reporting career which has seen him attend Seven Olympic Games, Five Commonwealth Games, Three Rugby World Cups, Two Cricket World Cups and Two Masters Golf Tournaments.
