Bay of Plenty First Eleven Win ND Twenty Tournament With Unbeaten Record

The Bay of Plenty Senior Men’s team can be well pleased with their 2018/19 representative campaign, with just a solitary stain of defeat on their ledger card. On the way, they annexed the Howell Family Trophy against Hawkes Bay, won the ND Twenty 20 title with a five-game unbeaten record - with their only loss against Hamilton in the Fergus Hickey Rosebowl competition.

ND Twenty 20 Coach’s Report

The most pleasing aspect for us, was that not only did we execute the key skills of batting, bowling and fielding well,  we also did the little things better than our oppositions and we did them consistently well during some of the hottest and physically draining conditions we have faced in Taupo.

While there were a number of new faces to Taupo, we were still very fortunate to have the experience and talent of four current or ex first class players and two ND A players to select from. It makes a coach’s job a lot easier when you have the likes of Brett Hampton and Bharat Popli at the top of the order for us.

Unsurprising to the side, everyone one of our players featured heavily in at least one match making the three days a true team effort. When some may have underperformed in one game, others stepped up and did the business.  This was no more evident than on day two against Northland we were in a lot of trouble. Jono Boult led the charge and with the help of Hampton, Drysdale, Musgrave and Collier - we not only dug ourselves out of a hole, but posted a massive score on what has been a very low scoring ground.

Bay of Plenty Senior Men’s Team at the ND Twenty 20 Tournament

On traditionally hard to bat pitches at Owen Delany our boys managed to score close to 200 on three occasions. We had some very good Power-Play overs, but even more importantly was the injection from the middle and lower order batsman who batted unselfishly but also strategically, giving us the impetus and momentum throughout our innings. Driving this middle overs attack, was Pete Drysdale, who has undoubtedly turned himself into a very accomplished T20 player.

Our batting was a standout, but this was also equaled by our bowling and fielding throughout the five games. At one stage the captain had nine bowling options in a game and although everyone may not have been needed, having that variety at your disposal is another reason the boys were so successful. As with the batting each game, a new bowler stepped up as well. As conditions, opposition and situations changed, we seemed to have the right type of bowler to use whether it was a seamer or spin bowler.

The icing on the cake was our fielding. The attitude the side brought in this area was very professional and it showed with the amount of chances we were able to create and the pressure we were able to put on our opponents. Key moments in all our games, were decided by the consistent high level of our fielding.

Fergus Hickey Rosebowl Review

Testament to the quality of the Bay Fergus Hickey campaign strategies, led by Coach Charles Williams, was the bounce-back from the mauling administered by the Hamilton representative side in early February. Two solid performances in the last two rounds, took the Bay team into second place on the 2018/19 Fergus Hickey Rosebowl standings.

There was disappointment for five players, who were selected to make their Bay of Plenty Senior Men’s side debut against Northland at the Bay Oval 24-25 November 2018, when the match was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

While the Bay team had enjoyed a grip on victories against Hamilton in recent seasons, the Waikato side grabbed their revenge, with a ten wicket victory in Hamilton 2-3 February 2019.

Hamilton won the toss and elected to put the visitors into bat, with standing success, as the Bay sides were rolled for 67 in just 27 overs. Hamilton then put their foot firmly on the Bay of Plenty throat, when they took a big first innings advantage, after they were dismissed for 303. The one bright Bay of Plenty performance, was Dominic Crombie’s four wicket bag on debut.

The Bay second turn at bat was a slightly improved performance, being dismissed for 169 runs, with Henry Collier batting at seven top scoring with a unbeaten 43 runs. While the outright defeat, was the worst possible start to the Bay of Plenty’s 2019 Fergus Hickey three game campaign, the Bay team dug deep to finish the Fergus Hickey Rosebowl with two solid first innings points victories.

Bay of Plenty missed by just one wicket, in grabbing a outright victory over Counties Manukau in their Fergus Hickey Rosebowl encounter 16-17 February 2019 – in which the Bay completely dominated from the opening ball.

At six down for 21 runs, Counties Manukau were in dire straits, however a ninth wicket stand between Ash Vodnala and Scott Johnson which produced 89 runs, gave the visitors some respectability. Vodnala was dismissed for his sides top score of 56 with Johnston 55 not out, as Counties were removed for 143. Cameron Riley impressed with three wickets.

Bay of Plenty took valuable first innings points on day one, when they were 237/2 at stumps. Peter Drysdale, became just the third Bay of Plenty batsman to score 3000 runs, going on to post 94 runs before being dismissed.

Bharat Popli continued on from his overnight score of 94 to top score with 135 runs. Skipper Joe Carter batting at four, produced a whirlwind attack on the Counties bowlers, smashing an unbeaten 113 from just 73 balls. The two Bay batsmen who head the all-time most centuries list, posted their 11th and 8th three figure scores, respectively

Bay of Plenty made their declaration in the 65th over, at 401 for the loss of four wickets, in order to chase maximum points in the ND representative competition.

Counties made a better showing in their second turn at bat and at 175/5, resisting the Bay bowlers attempt to bowl them out. At the end of the match’s regulation overs, Counties were 213/9, with Bay of Plenty taking first innings points from the game. Bay of Plenty debutant Fergus Lellman made a real impression, taking three wickets in Counties second innings, with Sean Davey and Tin Pringle taking two bowling scalps apiece.

Bay of Plenty ended their ND Fergus Hickey Rosebowl (two-day matches) campaign that kicked off in November 2018, when they ground out first innings points against Waikato Valley, during the weekend (2-3 March 2019).

Waikato Valley elected to bat first after winning the coin toss at St Paul’s Collegiate in Hamilton, on a track that looked to be a batsman’s paradise. Valley number four Chris Swanson (153) and Girvacques De Jagar (100) made good use of the conditions, to post a century apiece. The home side set the Bay team a very big target, to grab first innings points, when they declared at 365 for the loss of five wickets.

Bay of Plenty openers Peter Drysdale and Henry Collier got the visitors away to a outstanding start, to blunt the Waikato Valley bowling attack, with Collier the first to go for 56 with 102 runs on the board. Enter Blair McKenzie, who hammered 104 at a little less than a run a ball.

At 299/4, when McKenzie was dismissed, the Bay side looked well on track for first innings points from the match. The introduction of the second new ball changed the games momentum, with four wickets falling, before Dan Smith (12no) and Taylor Bettelheim (4no) hung tough, to take their side to first innings points.
