Bay Of Plenty Coastland Finish Third At ND Senior Secondary Cricket Tournament

Posted: Monday, 18 December 2017

Rain on day four of the ND Senior Secondary cricket tournament, played in Gisborne 11-15 December 2017, reduced the finals playoffs to one-day contests on the Friday.

Bay of Plenty Coastland finished the tournament with a flourish, after nailing third place, when they beat arch-rivals Hamilton for the second time. Opening batsman Marcel Collett again did his job with the bat, to give his team a good start belting a half century, as Coastland reached the 81 run Mark before losing their first wicket.

Coastland skipper Mikaere Leef, continued his good form with the willow to post a solid 45, with Cam Riley batting at eight chipping in with a handy 30 runs. The Bay of Plenty representatives set their Waikato counterparts a solid target after reaching 245/9.

Hamilton made a solid start and at five down for 158 runs had their nose in front. However the Western Bay side bowlers stuck to their task and removed their opponents for 187, to claim a convincing 58 run victory. Mikaere Leef again backed up his work with the bat, taking three wickets for 24 runs, with Dominic Crombie also grabbing a three wicket haul.

The Bay of Plenty Lakeland team, had a day they would rather forget after being bowled out for 41, by Waikato Valley in the battle for fifth and sixth place. Their opponents then cruised to a nine wicket win.

However the Lakeland side had their share of highlights during their week in Poverty Bay. The team drawn from the Eastern Bay, Rotorua and Taupo posted two victories, including a big win over the ND Invitation side. After being dismissed for 226, Lakeland bowled their opponents out for 174, to post a solid 52 run victory.

There were a number of outstanding individual performances posted from the two Bay of Plenty sides. Coastland skipper Mikaere Leef led from the front with both bat and ball, with a best of 65 against Hamilton in their first encounter. Leef along with Dominic Crombie and Cam Riley, snared prized three wicket bags, during the competition.

Eastern Bay of Plenty all-rounder Chris Tupea blasted 74 runs in the match with the ND Invitation side, with Ryan Neves posting 61 against  tournament winners Counties Manukau. Jarrod Mealing was the only Bay player to grab a four wicket bag, with four for just 11 runs against Poverty Bay.
