VERSATILE TAURANGA WILLIAMS CUP ROUND 4 HIGHLIGHTS

Posted: Monday, 31 January 2022

It was a neighborly battle in Rotorua with the Bayleys Central-Indians and the Craigs Investment Partners Geyser City Premiers squared off at Smallbone Park.

Batting first, Central put on a superb opening stand of 73 between Daniel Ford and Lovely Sandhu. When Ford succumbed to the bowling of Ben Astwood in the 16th over, Stephen Nicholls came in and another 73 run partnership was formed. Not to be outdone, Nadeera Nawela (62*) and captain Julian Danby (37) put on the third 73 run partnership of the innings, putting Central in the box seat with 270.
A wicket on the first ball of Geysers innings set the tone for their batting display and tight bowling from Central, in particular Andrew Gibbs who collected 4 wickets at an economy rate of 1.76 and an average of 3.75, saw the red and blues slump to 156 all out in the 48th over.

Bayleys Central Indians 270/6, 50 overs (Nadeera Nawela 62*, Lovely Sandhu 59; Dilraj Singh Gill 2/40)
Craigs Investment Partners Geyser City 156/10, 47.3 overs (Dilraj Singh Gill 54, Kasun Eranga 21; Andrew Gibbs 4/15)
Bayleys Central Indians won by 114 runs

The Baker Cup was up for grabs when Eves Realty Greerton challenged Bond & Co Mount Maunganui for the honour.

With 7 of their team away on rep duties, Mount Maunganui lost the toss and were given the task of bowling first. Greerton were looking good on 22 for no loss  in the 7th over when the marlins struck, dismissing opener Tom MacRury for 14. A 42 run partnership between Ben Lind and Daniel Price followed and a stellar innings from Umesh Ranaraja (90 runs off 79 balls) edged Greerton to 214 after their 50 overs.

Mount Maunganui found themselves in trouble at 75/8 in the 26th over and a gutsy 78 runs for the 9th and 10th wicket, including 50 not out from Dale Swan, avoided a huge defeat as Greerton won by 56 runs.

Eves Realty Greerton 214/7, 50 overs (Umesh Ranaraja 90*, Ben Lind 33; Jonathan Brewis 2/13)
Bond & Co Mount Maunganui 159/9, 50 overs (Dale Sawn 50*, Jonathan Brewis 15; Pip Thickpenny 2/19)
Eves Realty Greerton won by 56 runs

Coming off a win last weekend, Papamoa was hoping to replicate their success and climb the Versatile Tauranga Williams Cup ladder when they travelled down the road to Te Puke.

The day started well for Papamoa as they won the toss and decided to bat but that is where their luck ended - both openers were dismissed with 2 runs on the board.

Tim Tomlinson (12), Aman Mahal (39) and Ashish Dhameliya (15) tried to fight back but they were the only 3 who got to double digits as Papamoa was bowled out for 87. Josh Earle had a great day with the ball, taking 4 wickets at an economy rate of 2.22

The Flying Mullet Te Puke side didn't waste any time chasing down the 87 runs with 62% of their runs coming in boundaries. Tai Bridgman-Raison's superb form with the bat continued as he guided his side home with 41 not out off 62 balls.

Papamoa 87/10, 36 overs (Aman Mahal 36, Ashish Dhameliya 15; Josh Earle 4/20)
The Flying Mullet Te Puke 88/3, 22.4 overs (Tai Bridgman-Raison 41*, Iman Singh 41; Ashish Dhameliya 1/22)
The Flying Mullet Te Puke won by 7 wickets

With a couple of Holland Beckett Law Tauranga Boys College players awaiting covid test results, 2 new debutants were welcomed into the side as they came up against a strong Element IMF Otumoetai Cadets side.

Losing a crucial toss, Tauranga boys were asked to bowl first. Some tight bowling from Troy Barnett and debutant Jake Riley set up some pressure before Fynn Williamson came on to claim his first Premier wicket in his first over.
A great spell from both Riley (2/49) and Williamson (1/19) on debut set the innings up for the spinners to come on.

Charles Williams playing in his 300th game claimed the big wicket of Marcel Collett (40) with an absolute beauty through the gate! Tim Clarke was able to remove the Cadets skipper which set off a chain reaction of wickets over the next 10 overs and the youngsters came back on to clean up the tail to have Cadets all out for 211, Spencer Wills top scoring with 65.

Quick wickets saw Tauranga Boys in trouble at 6/2 in the 3rd over. Seb Heath and Tim Clarke put together a small partnership before another clump of wickets fell to some quality spin bowling. Harsh Patel tried to take on the spinners in a positive manner, but ultimately Tauranga Boys were out played by the spin duo of Jono Boult and Mayura Galappaththi and were removed for 122 inside 33 overs.

Element IMF Otumoetai Cadets 211/10, 45.2 overs (Spencer Wills 65, Marcel Collett 40; Charles Williams 2/29)
Holland Beckett Law Tauranga Boys College 122/10, 32.1 overs (Harsh Patel 37, Tim Clarke 19; Mayura Galappaththi 4/49)
