CRAIGS INVESTMENT PARTNERS Bay of Plenty Development Team Lift Aloft the ND Trophy in Triumph

Posted: Tuesday, 9 March 2021

Bay of Plenty lifted aloft the Basil McBurney Trophy aloft in triumph at the Bay Oval, on Sunday 7 March 2021, after winning the ND Development title courtesy of a simply outstanding batting display.

Hamilton won the toss and went out to bat on a pitch that looked to reward good batting technique. The Waikato side took the game to Bay of Plenty from the opening ball, with Callum Hill (88) and former Bay Development player Rueben Clinton (78), putting on a 138 run opening stand.

Bay of Plenty Development Coach Russell Williams said, “We lost the toss and got put in to field first. The Hamilton top order made us work really hard for the first forty overs, losing just two wickets. We showed really good fight to then bowl them out and restrict them to 264”.

At 223 for the loss of five wickets, Hamilton were in control. However the Bay bowlers and fielders then dug deep and grabbed the last five wickets for just 41 runs, to remove their opponents.

Henry Conway bowled genuine line and length, to take four wickets, with Josh Earle, Fergus Lellman and Finn Dempsey each taking a wicket. Outstanding work in the field, resulted in three run-outs, which played a big part in stifling the Hamilton lower order batting attack.

Bay of Plenty openers Michael Mitchell and Blair McKenzie, set the platform for the big seven wicket victory, with a 148 run first wicket partnership. After McKenzie was removed for 74, Mitchell carried on to top score with 96 runs to his name. The Mitchell innings, capped off a superb ND Development competition for the Taupo batsman, who finished the competition with 289 runs from four encounters.

New Zealand Under 19 player Fergus Lellman continued the Bay of Plenty momentum, smacking an unbeaten 65, as Bay of Plenty got home with the last ball of the 49th over.

“Our batting performance was outstanding from our top three, of Mike, Blair and Fergus,  but I think it was the fight we showed through our bowling effort that gave us that really good chance to win”, said the Bay Development Coach.

The Basil McBurney victory, was the Bay's second in three years, sandwiched by a paper-thin margin second place last season.

“I'm so pleased for this group. The culture we have created is really special and it has been a pleasure to coach them again this season. The wins and the trophies are a reflection of how hard they have worked together”. “Like I have said before, I can't say enough about these young men, they are always getting better and better and that's all we can ask for”.
