Craigs Investment Partners Bay of Plenty Development team, ran their current Basil McBurney Trophy campaign to two from two victories, after they won a hard fought battle against Northland at War Memorial Park in Manurewa on Sunday (14 February 2021).

Bay of Plenty Development Coach Russell Williams said “It was very pleasing to get another win. While we didn't play our best cricket, some great individual performances got us across the line. The lads are aware that we need to make some improvement in a couple of areas, to be more competitive next Sunday against Hamilton, which we know it is always a hard fought match”.

Northland elected to bat after winning the toss, with the Bay of Plenty bowlers making early inroads, to have the team from the far north in trouble at three down with just 33 runs on the board.

A fourth wicket stand turned the momentum around, with a half-century partnership, before he Bay bowlers struck back. At 126/6, the encounter had come back in Bay of Plenty's favour, before Northland number seven Brandon Peck defied the Bay bowlers to smack 54 runs.

Northland finished their turn at bat at 210 for the loss of eight wickets. Habib Malik, Henry Conway and Iman Singh, all bowled with genuine enthusiasm to be rewarded with two wickets apiece.

The Bay of Plenty reply got off to a circumspect start, with openers Michael Mitchell and Blair McKenzie picking their shots with care. A 93 run opening partnership, set the Bay up for a charge later in the innings. McKenzie was the first to be dismissed with 60 runs in the book, with Mitchell refusing to concede his wicket, in posting 48 runs from 103 balls.

Ben Musgrave hit a handy 25 runs, with his side in good position at 143/3, when he was removed. Needing six runs an over in the last ten overs, skipper Niven Dovey launched out to smack an unbeaten 52 off just 37 balls, to propel his team to victory with three wickets in hand.

“We have been playing a great style of cricket, for long periods of time, but we are yet to put it all together. We are still winning games, which is exciting for this group of player's, but they know we have a bit more left in the tank”, said Coach Williams.

The Bay Development side will have little time for rest, with the catch-up game with Hamilton next Sunday (21 February 2021) and the ND Development Finals day the following weekend.
