Two Bay of Plenty teams will represent the province at the ND Junior Secondary Cricket Tournament to be played in Whangarei 2nd - 6th December 2019 - with three additional Bay players selected for the Northern Districts Invitational side.
Bay of Plenty Lakeland players are drawn from the Eastern Bay of Plenty, Rotorua and Taupo, with Western Bay of Plenty, the catchment area for the Bay of Plenty Coastland representatives.
Participation in the ND Junior Secondary Schools tournament, is an important cog in the Bay of Plenty Cricket age-group pathway. Year 5 and 6 players kick of representation selection in BOPCA sub-association representative teams, before the most promising progress to Coastland and Lakeland Primary teams. The Bay of Plenty Junior and Senior Secondary teams are the last links in the Bay of Plenty Cricket age-group pathway.
“Age group tournaments are less about results and more about supporting the players development as cricketers and as young men. We are fortunate to have two quality coaches in Sam Owen and Sam Kershaw involved, both bring considerable knowledge and a level of professionalism to the environment”, said Bay of Plenty Cricket Pathways Manager Tai Bridgman-Raison
This year’s Bay of Plenty teams, have both been humming in training will enter the competition with positive mindsets of success. Twelve months ago, Bay of Plenty Coastland won the tournament Twenty 20 trophy, after dispatching archrivals Hamilton in the title decider. The Bay side posted 133/4 then bowled the Waikato side out for 88, to claim the ND prize.
Bay of Plenty Lakeland also performed with distinction in the weather blighted competition. They finished a meritorious fourth in the T20 competition and demolished Poverty Bay by 86 runs in their solitary 50 over game.
