Tauranga Boys and Aquinas Colleges to Play at ND Gillette Cup Finals Tournament

Competition To Be Decided Next Week

Tauranga Boys and Aquinas Colleges, have re-inked their credentials as amongst the top-flight cricket secondary schools in the country, with their participation in the ND Gillette Cup Finals in Rotorua next week.

Last season Tauranga Boys and Aquinas College finished third and fourth respectively, in the ND playoffs. Tauranga Boys College, have tasted success in what is effectively the New Zealand Secondary School cricket championship, sharing the title with Christchurch Boys High School in 2005.

Current Black Cap captain Kane Williamson, who captained the Tauranga Boys College First XI, holds the record for the most centuries at the Gillette Cup National Finals with three centuries.

Aquinas College has made impressive progress since introducing a school cricket pathway a few seasons ago.  Their fourth place finish twelve months ago, is testament to the emergence of a number of players who have been awarded Bay of Plenty representative honours.

Last year a spectacular Western Bay of Plenty School derby, closed the two Bay of Plenty team’s campaign at the ND First XI Cup Finals week, played in Hamilton. Tauranga Boys College and Aquinas College met to battle out third place, on day four, of the National Finals qualifying tournament.

Aquinas College batted first and led by a Fergus Lellman (116) century were removed for 209. Iman Singh and Rhys Donaghy both took four wicket bags. Tauranga Boys Taylor Bettleheim took control of his sides turn at bat to smack an unbeaten 105, as Tauranga Boys got home with eight wickets to spare.

Round One (25 March) Tauranga Boys College v St John’s Collegiate, Aquinas College v Kamo High School.

Round Two (26 March) Aquinas College v St Pauls Collegiate. Tauranga Boys College v Whangarei BHS.

Round Three (27 March) Tauranga Boys College v Hamilton BHS, Aquinas College v St Peters Collegiate.
