Aquinas and Tauranga Boys Colleges to Decide Third Place at the ND Gillette Cup Finals Tournament

Posted: Thursday, 28 March 2019

Day Three Recap

Aquinas College posted their second win on day three of the ND Gillette Cup Finals being played in Rotorua.

St Peters Cambridge won the toss and asked Aquinas to bat first, with the Western Bay side making another solid start before losing their first wicket at the 57 run mark. Fergus Lellman again opened his sides batting attack to post his sides top score of 31.

At 94 for the loss of four wickets, Aquinas looked on target for a big score, however the Cambridge School bowlers fought back to remove their opponents for 158. Toby Taylor and Finn Dempsey both made solid contributions to the Aquinas total.

Two wickets apiece from Finn Dempsey, Darcy Hoskin, Fergus Lellman and Spencer Wills did the damage, as St Peter’s were removed for 131 with the first ball of the 35th over, to give the Western Bay team a hard fought 27 run win.

A courageous captain’s knock, didn’t quite get Tauranga Boys College home against archrivals Hamilton Boys High School. The Waikato School side batted first and were restricted to 216 for the loss of nine wickets, with Liam Collett the best of the Tauranga Boys bowlers with three wickets for 37 runs.

Tauranga Boys College captain Taylor Bettelheim opened his teams batting attack and was a rock at one end, as his teammates came and went at the crease. The Tauranga Boys team leader, put on a 52 run partnership with Niven Dovey, before Dovey was bowled for 35.

Bettleheim continued to defy the opposition attempts to remove him, putting together a number of valuable partnerships, including a ninth wicket stand of 33 with Mitchell Kale (10). When Taylor was the Tauranga Boys last man out at the 188 run mark, he had smacked 109 runs from 136 balls, which included a dozen 4’s and a big blow over the boundary rope.

In a case of history repeating itself, Tauranga Boys College and Aquinas College will play off for third place in the NZ Cricket National Finals qualifying competition for the second successive year, on day four.

The Two Western Bay of Plenty Schools First XI’s can be well pleased with their performances at the 2019 ND tournament, with Aquinas College looking to reverse last year’s result, where Tauranga Boys took out bragging rights in the 2018 battle between the two First XI’s.
