Day One of Four-Day Tournament Recap

Aquinas College made a winning start to the ND Gillette Cup playoffs being played in Rotorua this week (25-28 March 2019), when they chased down a revised target, which utilized the Duckworth-Lewis method of achieving a result in a rain affected match.

Northland’s Kamo High School batted first and posted a very defendable target when they reached 220/8, in a match originally scaled back to 45 overs per side. The Kamo batsmen got away to a good start, before the introduction of Aquinas first change bowler Cypress Purden-Winters, who removed the opposition middle order taking four wickets for 30 runs. Toby Taylor also did plenty of damage with three wickets.

Newly minted Bay of Plenty representative batsman Fergus Lellman and Joel Hayes, got the Western Bay School away to an absolute flyer, with a 107 run partnership. After Hayes went for 44, Fergus continued the attack on the Kamo bowlers.

While wickets fell at one end, the Aquinas opener continued on, before combining with number ten batsman Harrison McGregor to take their team past the required target. Lellman carried his bat to post a neat one hundred runs off 88 balls with McGregor finishing with 22 not out.

Tauaranga Boys College, also got off to a successful start to the four-day tournament, with an eight wicket win over St Peters College. Tauranga Boys bowled first in the 45 over match and restricted St Peters to 146/8. Isaac White and Liam Collett bowled superb line and length, with Isaac taking four wickets for 29 runs and Liam returning figures of 3/26.

The Tauranga Boys openers got away to a flyer and were 48 without loss after nine overs, when the rain intervened. With a revised target of 141 off 42 overs - the returning batsmen set out to get the runs as quickly as possible with more rain on the horizon, getting home in the 21st over. Skipper Taylor Bettleheim carried his bat with an aggressive 77 runs with Cameron Templer (33) and Tim Pringle (20) making solid contributions.
