Central Indians Defeat Defending Williams Cup Title Holders

Bayleys Central Indians showed just how competitive that the Williams Cup will be this season, when they defeated current title holders New World Te Puke at the Te Puke Domain on Saturday (7 January 2017).

The Rotorua team won the toss and elected to bat first on a pitch that looked to favour the bowlers later in the day. Central Indians youngster Ryan Neves got his team away to good start with the opening partnership with AJ Kumar producing 41 runs. Kumar continued the momentum to top score with 56 off 46 balls, with Andrew Gibbs (31) and Stephen Nicholls (24) making handy contributions.

Te Puke bowler Calem Taylor was in top form taking five wickets for 23 runs as the Rotorua visitors were bowled out for 150. Cam Riley also bowled well to be rewarded with three bowling scalps.

Central Indians attack bowler Andrew Gibbs quickly hit his stride grabbing two early wickets. At three down for a handful of runs, Te Puke were in trouble, before Gareth Wallace (33) Josh Earle (20) and Alex Gooding (20) restored stability to their sides turn at bat.

Himesh Gosai wrapped up the Te Puke tail with three wickets for 27 runs, as the home side were bowled out for 119. Shonit Chandra also bowled with genuine enthusiasm to take two wickets in his teams 31 run victory.

Central Indians co-captain Andrew Gibbs said "the win will give our boys a huge amount of confidence after not producing a winning result in the first half of the season". "We proved to ourselves against Te Puke that we have a side that will be extremely competitive in the Williams Cup and look forward to the rest of the season with genuine confidence".

Element IMF Cadets laid down the challenge to the other Williams Cup contenders with an emphatic victory against Eves Realty Greerton, at the Tauranga Domain. Led by a five wicket bag from long serving Cadets bowler Ben Christensen, the visitors were bundled out for 89. Cadets cruised home to a nine wicket win to take the Baker Cup (WBOPCA Challenge Trophy) from the Greerton grasp, with Morton Freer (29no) and Jono Boult (24) doing the damage with the bat.

Carrus Mount Maunganui also made a definitive statement when they defeated Cooney Lees Morgan Tauranga Boys College, in a high scoring encounter. The Mount posted a big target when the reached 280/6 in their fifty overs. Brenton Thompson was in sterling form at the top of the innings with 97 runs and produced a 160 run opening stand with Nick Smith (63). Peter Drysdale posted an unbeaten half century with Rhys Mischewski the best of the Tauranga Boys bowlers with two wickets.

The Tauranga students made a valiant attempt to chase down the big target before being removed for 170. Charles Williams held his sides innings together posting an undefeated 70. Mount quick bowler Chris Atkinson, who was returning from an injury break returned 3/27 with Luke Tatley and Peter Drysdale taking two wickets apiece.
