Carrus Mount Maunganui And Element IMFCadets Remain Unbeaten In Williams Cup Title Race

Carrus Mount Manunganui and Element IMF Cadets, remain the only unbeaten teams in the BOPCA Williams Cup after the opening two rounds of the 2017 competition.

Cadets had to repel a solid challenge from Cooney Lees Morgan Tauranga Boys College at Blake Park on Saturday (14 January 2017) before banking the win points on offer. Tauranga Boys batted first, with Yorkshire County batsman Alex Lees, who is playing for the Tauranga students in the Baywide club competition, opening the batting. Lees stroked the ball to a quality half century, before being bowled by Cadets skipper Scott Steward. A 56 run opening partnership with Marcel Collett got the Tauranga Boys side away to a solid start

Sean Wakelin contributed 22 runs as TBC were removed for 188, to set Cadets a solid target. Scott Steward was the best of the Cadets bowling attack taking four wickets for 22 runs.

The Cadets run chase hit some speed bumps at 17/2, before Cadets stalwart Ben Christensen dug deep to anchor his side to a five wicket win, with an unbeaten 73. Donavan Deeble posted 40 runs, with Daniel Maathuis there as victory came with 39 not out. Sean Wakelin and Craig Baldry took two wickets apiece for Tauranga Boys.

Mount Maunganui, wasted little time in dispatching current Williams Cup title holders New World Te Puke, at the Te Puke Domain. The home side were removed for just 109, with Northern Knights attack bowler Tony Goodin taking three wickets for Mount Maunganui. The Mount side cruised to victory without losing a wicket, with Brenton Thompson posting an undefeated 65 and Nick Smith 41 not out.
