Tauranga Boys College First Xi Chase Super Eight Success In Gisborne Next Week.

The Tauranga Boys College First XI to play at the Super Eight Cricket tournament in Gisborne next week, is a good mix between the Schools senior players (year 13) and the promotion of a number of emerging players due to the annual school leaver’s migration.

The Super Eight kicked off in 2002 and has been won by all the heavyweights of North Island Secondary School Cricket, since the tournaments inception. Palmerston North were the first winners of the Cricket Super Eight silverware and annexed the title again in 2011. Other multiple
winners are Hamilton and Napier Boys Highs, along with Tauranga Boys College with back to back titles in 2005 and 2006.

Tauranga Boys College Coach Charles Williams said “With a number of young players from the TBC cricket pathway, having earned promotion to this year’s super eight side, our goal is to develop as a unit and build towards the Gillette Cup competition”.

“The wheel has gone full circle, as my first Super 8 as a player, was in Gisborne, with Neil Howard coaching the team. This year we are returning to Gisborne in my first season as coach, with Neil being our manager” said Charles.

Tom Renouf, who is hard hitting number three batsmen and part time keeper will captain the team, with opener Sean Wakelin appointed the side’s vice-captain. Josh Ormrod posted a century against Saint Ignatius College from Sydney, Australia in December 2015. Wicket keeper James Hanson is a solid back foot batsman while Calem Taylor is a very talented spin bowler.

Leg spinner Brad Howard, grabbed a five wicket bag in Western Bay senior men’s cricket earlier this season. Mikaere Leef shows maturity beyond his years with the bat with Kinnon Nelson and David Rout both talented all rounders.

Tauranga Boys are well served in the bowling ranks. Rhys Mischewski is a young opening bowler of untapped potential, with Dominic Crombie and Craig Baldry along with the team’s all-rounder’s giving the team plenty of bowling options.
