Two BOP Representative Batsmen and a Bowler Awarded Bay Of Plenty Player Of The Month Honours

Two Bay of Plenty representative batsmen and a young representative bowler have been awarded the December, January and February BOPCA Player of the Month Awards.

Bay of Plenty Cricket introduced the BOPCA Player of the Month Award in 2006.  The purpose of the award is to recognise excellence in Bay of Plenty Cricket during each month of the playing season.

Alastair Blackett had to take time out from boarding school, when he was selected to play for Bay of Plenty at the annual ND One-Day tournament in Taupo 4-6 December 2016. On day two, the Bay of Plenty team came up against long-time rivals Hamilton, with the prize at stake being a berth in the Brain Dunning Trophy Final the following day.

Hamilton got away on the Bay bowlers in the fifty over per side encounter, before the introduction of Alastair Blackett into the bowling attack. The Waikato team were looking on track for 300 plus runs before Blackett swung into action. Six wickets at a cost of 35 runs, resulted in Hamilton being bowled out for 255, with Bay of Plenty getting home with four wickets to spare.

Yorkshire County CC limited overs captain Alex Lees, blasted his way into the Bay of Plenty all-time records in his first game in the Bay of Plenty uniform, in January 2017. Lees, who came to the Bay of Plenty to play cricket during the English winter, was in sublime form against Counties Manukau in the first Hawke Cup Direct Challenge of the season.

Bay of Plenty were 75 for one, when Lees strode the crease. When the Bay number three was caught by Ash Vodnala, after 301 minutes at the wicket, he had rewritten the Bay of Plenty representative batting history. The Yorkshire professional blasted 223 runs that included 22 boundaries and one over the Bay Oval boundary picket fence.

Lees finished his turn at bat with the all-time highest score, going past Joe Carter’s 215 against Poverty Bay in 2014. He also took ownership of the Bay of Plenty highest Hawke Cup score, along with the most runs of a Bay player on debut.

Sean Davey, achieved the previously unheard of feat, of blasting three centuries in successive Bay of Plenty minor association games, during February 2017. The Bay of Plenty middle order batsmen started his run of three figure scores with 113, against Hamilton in a Fergus Hickey Rosebowl game. Next up, was 141 in the Hawke Cup Direct Challenge with Hawkes Bay, where Alex Lees also posted a second Hawke Cup successive century with an identical 141 runs.

In the third Bay of Plenty Hawke Cup defence of the season against Nelson, Davey batting at seven, took up the attack and smashed his way to his sides top score of 111 off 189 balls, which included fourteen 4’s and three 6’s. Sean made three significant contributions in big match/pressure situations that is unlikely to be matched for a very long time.
