Sunday Cricket

Runs and wickets galore will be on show at Blake Park on Sunday (26 February 2017) with the third edition of the Baywide Secondary School T10 Shootout. Teams of Nine, with eight players on the field at any one time, will fight to have their name engraved on the Bay of Plenty Cricket trophy

Seven Bay of Plenty Secondary School teams, will take part in the quick-fire action where the batting team has just ten overs to post a competitive score. With the emphasis on scoring quick runs, there is likely to be plenty of sprinting between the wickets. However it is expected that plenty of wickets will fall with run-outs also being on the fielding teams watch list.

Lake Taupo CC and three Western Bay of Plenty Reserve Grade sides, will go to battle at Fergusson Park, in the BOPCA McNaughton Trophy semi-finals. The McNaughton Trophy is effectively the Bay of Plenty Reserve Grade crown, which is currently held by R&A Sangha.

The Lake Taupo CC representatives will square off with Cadets, with Western Bay B Grade side Grasshoppers meeting R&A Sangha.

Otumoetai Cadets who have won numerous Mc Naughton Trophy titles in past seasons, got past archrivals Mount Maunganui in a close run affair, in the opening round. Cadets last four opponent, will be Lake Taupo CC who easily dispatched fellow Taupo side in Taupo Old Boys.

Grasshoppers became the first Western Bay of Plenty B Grade team, for a number of years, to make the McNaughton Trophy last four playoffs, when they beat Rotorua side Geyser City. The Hoppers posted a big total of 250/9 and then bowled their opponents out for 141.

Defending McNaughton titleholders R&A Sangha, who are having just an average regular season, defeated Greerton to give themselves a chance to win back to back title. Greerton removed the Indian side for 138, but came up seven runs short in the target chase.

While Lake Taupo team will be heavily favoured to make the McNaughton Trophy title decider, there should be a battle royal between Grasshoppers and the Sangha XI, to go through to next weekend finale.
