Knights Win

The Knights, blasted their way into the top four of the McDonalds Super Smash, overpowering the Auckland Aces at the Bay Oval on Tuesday (27 December 2016).

After winning the toss, the Aces elected to bat with Bay of Plenty’s Jono Boult opening the bowling with his off-spinners to good effect. The visitors loss their first two wickets for 23 runs, with Aces danger-man Rob Nicol run out for a duck from a stunning throw at the stumps by Corey Anderson.

Jono Boult, took two Auckland middle order wickets from catches taken by BJ Watling and Knights new recruit Peter Bocock.  At five down for 87 runs, the Auckland side were in trouble before they got through to 142 for the loss of six wickets, after their twenty overs. Scott Kuggeleijn bowled with real authority to finish with two wickets at a cost of 28 runs.

While the Aces total didn’t look enough, few watching the game were prepared for the Knights batting blitzkrieg, that saw them get home with nine wickets to spare. Knights skipper, Dean Brownlie who resides in the Western Bay of Plenty, went on attack from the opening over to top score with 54 off just 34 balls.

The Knights were in a strong position at 87/1, when Corey Anderson strode out to join BJ Watling at the crease. Watling then took charge to belt an unbeaten 53 runs, with Corey Anderson smashing two sixes in his 23 not out, as victory came with the third ball of the 15th over.

The Knights win, which saw them leapfrog the Otago Volts into fourth place on the standings, has set up an intriguing encounter at the Bay Oval on Thursday (29 December 2016). The Knights will back up against the Canterbury Kings, who sit just two points ahead of the Northern Districts side on the standings. With just three round remaining before the playoffs, the Knights would cement their top four standing, with victory over the Canterbury side on Thursday.
