Knights Surge Into Second Place On The McDonalds Super Smash Standings

The Knights surged into second place on the McDonalds Super Smash standings, after they defeated the Canterbury Kings at the Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, on Thursday (29 December 2016) afternoon.

Bay of Plenty off-spin bowler Jono Boult, again opened the Knights bowling attack, after the visitors won the toss and elected to bat. The Knights bowlers strangled the Canterbury top order attempts to hit out, to have  them three down with just 49 runs on the board, after eight overs.

Scott Kuggeleijn sent Ken McClure back to the pavilion, when he propelled the Canterbury batsman’s off stump cart -wheeling through the air in the fourth over. Just when Black Cap Peter Fulton was looking to hit out, Jono Boult, caught and bowled the Canterbury number four to have the visitors bogged down.

For the second game in a row, Knights new recruit Peter Bocock, took another stunning catch to have the Kings in further trouble at 60 for four. Todd Astle batting at seven, steadied the ship to top score with an unbeaten 37, as the Canterbury team reached 127/6 in their allotted overs.

The Knights opening partnership of skipper Dean Brownlie and BJ Watling, again took control in their second successive outing at the Bay Oval, to reach the 62 run mark before Brownlie was removed for 36 off just 22 balls. While three cheap wickets fell, BJ Watling was a rock at the other end, to take his side home to victory with an undefeated 52 runs. Nick Kelly (23no) and Watling combined to produce a 42 run winning partnership.

Victory against the Wellington Firebirds at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Friday (30 December 2016), should book the Northern Districts side a berth in the McDonalds Super Smash playoffs, that will be contested on the 5th and 7th January 2017.
