HAWKE CUP DIRECT CHALLEGE @ BAY OVAL, MOUNT MAUNGANUI 10-12 February 2017 – Day Two

Hawkes Bay resumed at 70/6 on day two of the Hawke Cup Direct Challenge being played at the Bay Oval Mount Maunganui, with the Bay bowlers wrapping up the tail, in the morning session of day two with the visitors being dismissed for 103.

Donovan Deeble did plenty of damage with the ball taking four for 34, with Tony Goodin, Sean Davey and Chris Atkinson all taking two wickets apiece. Brad Schmulian anchored his team’s meagre total with a gritty 47, with Hawkes Bay conceding first innings points to the current Hawke Cup titleholders.

Bay of Plenty went out to bat in their second innings, with a 67 run advantage. While the first day belonged to the bowlers from both sides, the last two sessions on day two firmly belonged to the Bay of Plenty batsmen.

Hawkes Bay had early success taking the first two wickets for 24 runs. Yorkshire professional Alex Lees and Northern Knights batsmen Joe Carter came together to put on a 161 run stand, before Carter was dismissed for 61. Lees carried on to smash 141 runs, before being removed which gave the Northern Hemisphere visitor, his second Hawke Cup century in just three games in the Bay of Plenty uniform.

Sean Davey (32no) and Brenton Thompson (25no) continued the Bay of Plenty momentum late on day two, with the home side reaching 324 for the loss of six wickets at stumps. Bay of Plenty, who grabbed the first innings advantage, lead the Hawke Cup contest by 391 runs with four wickets in hand.
