Hamilton Take First Innings Points From Bay Of Plenty In A High Scoring Fergus Hickey Rosebowl Encounter

The Fergus Hickey Rosebowl two-day match between Bay of Plenty and Hamilton at Galloway Park in Hamilton played over the weekend (4/5 February 2017) featured plenty of cheap wickets and two centuries apiece from the two long-time rivals.

Bay of Plenty bowled first and grabbed their first wicket with just five runs on the board. Sustained attack by Sean Davey, who finished with five wickets, contained the Hamilton batsmen. When Bay of Plenty had the Waikato side nine down for just 189 runs, the visitors seemed to be in control.

However Hamilton number eleven Freddy Walker had other ideas when he arrived at the crease. In tandem with Anish Desai, the pair put up a remarkable batting display, putting on a 220 run stand for the tenth wicket. Desai batting at three, anchored his team innings to finish with 165 runs to his name, when Hamilton declared late on day two at 409/9.

Walker put on an outstanding display for a number eleven batsman hammering 150 runs off just 125 balls. His turn at the batting crease produced twenty three 4’s and a one six.

Bay of Plenty lost their wicket for five runs, being 25 for one at stumps on day one. Things got worse early on day two, with the Hamilton City side having the Bay in a deep hole, at five down for 56.

Opener Peter Drysdale was a rock at one end and when Sean Davey batting at six, arrived at the crease, the fight back began. Davey was the first to three figures, reaching 113 before being caught by Peter Bocock, with the Bay of Plenty captain posting 118 runs off a hard fought 275 balls.

The end came when Bay of Plenty were bowled out for 322 in the 92nd over, to give Hamilton first innings points. Bay of Plenty showed plenty of courage to come back from the precipice of ignominious defeat.

The Bay of Plenty milestones continued to roll on from last weekend’s successful Hawke Cup defence. Davey smacked his maiden Bay of Plenty century, while Peter Drysdale brought up his third Bay of Plenty three figure total and his highest total in eight seasons of representative cricket. Tony Goodin grabbed a wicket which took his Bay of Plenty total to the 150 wicket mark.

The Bay of Plenty team have just four days to regroup, before their second Hawke Cup Direct Challenge defence against Hawkes Bay, which starts next Friday (10 February 2017).
