Busy Sunday For Bay Of Plenty Cricket

Sunday (12 February 2107) will be a big day for a number of Bay of Plenty cricket players, who will be backing up from club cricket the previous afternoon.

The Bay of Plenty Development team travel to Cambridge to play their last game of the Basil McBurney Trophy, while the first round of the BOPCA McNaughton trophy kicks off at Fergusson Park in Tauranga.

Bay of Plenty enter the last round of the ND Development competition at the top of the standings (tied with Northland), with victory at the Cambridge Square on Sunday, likely to give them at least a share of the ND title.

The Bay of Plenty second eleven that will travel to the heart of the Waikato, follows the philosophy of several battle hardened representative players interspersed with the rising young cricket talent in the region. Bay Development Captain Stephen Crossan and keeper Matt Golding have both played for the Bay of Plenty Senior Men’s representative team.

Rotorua youngster Alastair Blackett made a stunning entrance at the ND One-Day tournament in December 2106. Bay of Plenty squared off with archrivals Hamilton in the semi-finals on day two, with Blackett grabbing six wickets, as the Bay side swept into the title decider with four wickets to spare.

Sunday also sees the start of what is widely regarded as the Bay of Plenty Reserve Grade Championship. The McNaughton Trophy, is given to the winner of the Baywide Reserve Grade knockout competition, with eight teams starting the title race in round one.

Both Mount Maunganui and Otumoetai Cadets, who both have their name engraved on the McNaughton silverware, meet in the opening round on Fergusson One. Geyser City travel from Rotorua to meet the only B Grade team in the title race in Grasshoppers, while Greerton take on defending McNaughton champions R&A Sangha.

A local Taupo derby will take place in the Great Lake region, where the Lake Taupo Cricket Club will face off against Taupo Old Boys, which will ensure Taupo representation in the McNaughton semi-finals.
