To Kick Off Next Friday

Mark down Friday 3rd March 2017, as a significant date for cricket-mad young girls of the Bay of Plenty region, with the inaugural BOPCA Junior NPL (Northern Premier League) kicking off at the Bay Oval Mount Maunganui.

Bay of Plenty Cricket Women’s Development Officer Rebecca Yee has put in place a junior version of Northern Districts highly successful NPL. Four Year 7 to Year 10 teams, will play on the Bay Oval in games where enjoyment of cricket is as important as the game results

Local White Fern Samantha Curtis has agreed to be the Junior NPL Ambassador and where possible will be on hand at the Bay Oval for the BOPCA Junior NPL series, in between her White Ferns playing commitments.

The four teams will wear colourful uniforms similar to the Northern Districts NPL and will sport action packed names. The BOPCA Junior NPL follows on from the highly successfully GoGirl in-school program for year 4-6 girls and is the next stepping stone in the female player pathway.

BOPCA Cricket Manager Tai Bridgman-Raison said “The Junior NPL competition provides the next step in the female pathway as player’s progress from the Year 4-6 GoGirl program. Eventually we will expand the Junior NPL to include the year 10-13 year age bracket as the current players move through the age-grades”.

The introduction of the Junior NPL on Friday, will follow on from NZ Cricket funding free buses to bring aspiring young woman players to the Bay Oval, to watch Game Two of “The Rosebowl” ODI series, the previous day. The school visits to the ODI game, is to give the aspiring players the opportunity to experience the atmosphere of an international game in their own backyard.

Free entry for all cricket fans is part of the deal to bring two Women’s ODI’s to the Bay Oval on Thursday 2nd March and Sunday 5th March 2017. Last year’s clash between the two long-time rivals, saw the Australian Women take home “The Rosebowl” 2-1, after losing the first game of the series.

Prior to the start of the Junior NPL, the White Ferns will be in attendance at the Bay Oval to offer advice, autographs and general support, before the kickoff of the first Junior NPL games at 5pm.
