Baker Cup On The Line At Pemberton Park

The race to lift aloft the Baywide Cup aloft in triumph, is well and truly on, with just two rounds remaining before the 2016 Baywide title is decided.

Element IMF Cadets and Carrus Mount Maunganui hold down the top two spots, in the first past the post competition, with Cooney Lees Morgan Tauranga Boys College lurking just of the pace in third position.

The most intriguing match-up on Saturday (10 December 2016) is the clash at Pemberton Park between Eves Realty Greerton and Tauranga Boys College. While Tauranga Boys will be desperate to win to keep their title hopes alive, the home side have the Baker Cup (WBOPCA Challenge Trophy) back in their trophy cabinet and won’t surrender the challenge prize without a fight.

Both teams have some extremely talented young players in their ranks, who have made real impressions in Baywide cricket this season. Former Tauranga Boys players, Jared Tutty and Josh Ormrod have made solid showings at the Pemberton Park based club this season. Last weekend Ormrod posted 31 runs against a strong Te Puke bowling attack with Tutty having best Baywide bowling figures of 5/24.

Tauranga Boys all-rounder Sean Wakelin, sits in the top twenty in the Baywide Cup batting stakes and has taken 16 wickets, with best bowling figures of four wickets for 20 runs. Rhys Mischewski and leggie Iman Singh have both made their mark with the ball.

Cadets sit at the top of the Baywide Cup standings, with the formbook suggesting that they should account for New World Te Puke at the Te Puke Domain. Last weekend Morton Freer and Donovan Deeble blasted a 230 run partnership, against Bayleys Central Indians, with both batsmen smashing centuries. Deeble finished his unbeaten knock with the season’s best of 151 runs, with Freer still there at the end with 104 runs to his name.

Te Puke has plenty of batting firepower in their ranks, with Tai Bridgman-Raison and skipper Stephen Crossan, who both like taking aim on the boundary ropes. Another fearless Te Puke batsman is Alex Gooding who is equally adept at grabbing bowling scalps.

While Central Indians sit in the Baywide Cup cellar, Mount Maunganui won’t be taking a win for granted, when the Rotorua side pay a visit to Blake Park on the weekend. Each season throws up big upset that no-one saw coming, with the Mount not wanting to be the recipient of such an upset on Saturday.
