BOP take Basil McBurney Trophy

The Bay of Plenty Development cricket team won the Basil McBurney Trophy, which is the symbol of ND Development superiority, when they beat Waikato Valley last Sunday (12 February 2017). The Bay of Plenty Basil McBurney triumph, is the fourth ND Development Championship in the last fifteen years.

Bay of Plenty, took out the Basil McBurney prize by a solitary point from Northland, courtesy of a bonus point from the win over Waikato Valley. A tie between Bay of Plenty and Northland, would still have resulted in a Bay of Plenty taking out the title courtesy of the Bay beating Northland in round robin play.

Bay of Plenty Coach Charles Williams, in his first Basil McBurney game of the season, led his team to 220 all out with a hard hit 76 runs against Waikato Valley. Sean Wakelin made a solid contribution to the Bay of Plenty target with 31 runs.

While the home side made a reasonable start, the Bay of Plenty bowlers took control to dismiss the hosts for 128, to grab a big 92 run win and the ND Development title. Brody Gilroy, who finished the top Bay Development bowler with eight wickets in the season - took three for 16. Sean Wakelin and Luke Tatley also bowled with enthusiasm to take two bowling scalps apiece

Gilroy, finished in third place in the ND Development competition bowling stakes with his eight wickets and best figures of five wickets for 26 runs. Luke Tatley finished fifth in the ND bowling stakes with six wickets.

The highest Bay of Plenty batting total, was the 76 runs belted by Charles Williams against Waikato Valley. Jonty Grigson and Christian MacDonald also posted half centuries during the 2016/17 Basil McBurney title race. Bay of Plenty keeper Matt Golding and bowler Iman Singh led the competition catches with three apiece.
